About twenty years ago I encountered the remarkable bulb research of Dr Marina Baranova. I still remember opening the journal in the library at Kew. There in graphic detail was the annual bulb renewal and stoloniferous growth of many Fritillaria species, however the text was all in Russian. One character at a time I pasted the Cyrillic letters into Babelfish, an early online translation tool. Later with the help of a retired diplomat I worked on a full translation of her 1991 publication. Through a contact at the Marlinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg a copy of the English text was hand delivered for Dr Baranova for her approval. Marina Baranova is one of the amazing scientists that continues to inspire my Fritillaria studies.
Technical Details: The work is a photo-composite from 2013; digitally hand edited in Photoshop with a graphic pad and pen for about 25 hours.
